"The most profound technologies
are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the
fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable
from it."
-Mark Weiser, Scientific American, Sep. 1991
Communication technologies profoundly change the way we
live. The Department of Communication at the University
of Indianapolis, Athens Campus is now at the forefront of
efforts to explore these economic, social, cultural and
organizational processes and the ways they interrelate and
interact, as we prepare students to study and manage the
communication revolution in education, politics, management,
marketing, government, and non-governmental institutions.
Within the framework of the Master's Program in Media and
Communication, our central mission is the pursuit of the
highest order of excellence through our teaching and research
activities in the theory and practice of communication.
The study of communication stretches from the ancient Greeks
to the frontiers of cyberspace. At its core, our field engages
an essential aspect of human life: the creation and sharing
of meaning in diverse social, institutional, political and
business contexts. Our graduate program combines an emphasis
on communication theory and research methods along with
new technologies, policy implications, and practical applications.
Graduates go on to positions of leadership and responsibility
in media corporations, new business ventures, government
organizations, as well as academia.
As with all graduate programs at UIAC, students with diverse
backgrounds come together to complete courses of study that
emphasize participation in lectures and seminars, field
research in organizations, group research projects and independent
study. The academic schedule is flexible enough to allow
students a wide degree of latitude in designing their own
program of study and accommodate those with demanding work
schedules.
I do hope that you will find the M.A. in Media and Communication
as exciting and challenging as our current students do.
